New Year New Army - Drukhari

As ever with the new year there's that burst of enthusiasm to start a new project. In the case of Games Workshop we start every year with their New Year New Army push which I always think ill get involved on but never do.

Well I'm going to try it this year but cheat slightly in that I update an old army instead.

Inspired by my first game of 40k since 8th edition at Christmas that army will be Drukhari.

This army have been gradually painted up since about 2010 (I phased out the original models gradually when the new army came out), however seeing as most of the army was painted the night before various doubles tournaments, plus it's been heavily used in previous editions, it's not in great shape.

My aim will be to get 1500 points repaired and repainted as well as some smaller games under my belt (combat patrol size most likely) over the course of the year.

Some units of further on that others but the whole army needs rebasing, as well as magnets adding as I plan to store them outside of the usual foam cases they've been in (which mainly snap off all the various spikes on the models).

Anyway, without further ado, I present the list:

I'll put up separate posts with the models out of this that I've finished to date, but they are as follows:

1 x Archon - this is a Lady Malys conversion I'm particularly proud of!

10 x Kabalite Warriors - painted these up last year and they were my first new Drukhari unit for about a decade

5 x Incubi - the new models that I'd had in a box since the Rise of the Phoenix box set way back in (I think) 7th?

1 x Ravager - this was a new model from a Christmas army box, again it's been sat in the loft for years.

Anyway, that's it for now. Let's see if we can actually make this a reality this year!

Badlands Brawl Waagh! Drummer

A quick and easy addition to my recently completed Goblin team for Blood Bowl

This guy is going to be used as a Waagh Drummer inducement for my Badlands Brawl teams (currently Goblins and Black Orcs). This inducement comes in at 50k and allows me to potentially push an opposition player back 3 squares (or 3 players back 1) at the start of each drive. Useful to stop my poor line Goblins getting battered on the line of scrimmage.

The model itself is an old GW sculpt, possibly from the 80s but still has lots of character and detail in my opinion.

Bloodbowl - Project Night Goblins and Bugmans Belter 2024

Finished my first project of the 2024, a Night Goblin team for Blood Bowl.

I had great fun with this project, with the aim being to use only Gamesworkshop models so i was able to play it at Warhammer World in their tournaments.

The models themselves are from a variety of kits and systems. Warhammer Underworlds is represented through Zarbags Gitz, Mollogs Mob and Grinkraks Looncourt for one of the Trolls and the specialist positionals. The regular line Goblins are from the Gloomspite stabbas kit and the Ooligan and Doomdiver (winged squig with goblin "pilot") are from the Squig Herd kit.

Of course, with so many kits and having had a great time building them I've now got the Goblin bug. Perhaps I might try and revisit that original plan I set out so long ago at the beginning of this blog to actually build a Night Goblin army....

Took this team to Bugmans Belter 2024 at Warhammer World as well. Went 1 win and 2 losses, beating a shambling Undead team but getting hammered by 2 lizard teams. I did win Dirtiest Player though so I'd regard that as a win!

Isengard Scout Troll

As part of my gaming groups secret Santa I've recently completed this Isengard "Scout" Troll

It's a minor conversion from the standard kit, basically adding a leather coat using greenstuff and some minor alterations to the left leg to put it in a running pose.

It took me a while to get into painting this model to be honest, mainly because I can't paint a leather effect very well at all. It came together though with the basing however and I'm pretty pleased with the overall look in the end, as was the person I was gifting it to!

The White City - Avenger Bolt Thrower

I've been somewhat productive lately with the painting and have completed yet another unit. By my standards it came together pretty quickly as well, although probably helps it's a warmachine.....

The Avenger Bolt Thrower gives my Minas Tirith force some much needed ranged punch, especially important when facing the forces of darkness who have a rather unpleasant tendency to include trolls, fell beasts and other assorted nasties in their rosters.

I toyed with the idea of a Trebuchet, but the theme (if you can call it that) of my force is a band of warriors fighting in Osgiliath, or serving on a fort on the Rammas Echor, so something a bit more portable seemed more fitting at this point.
As I've said, the model was quick to paint, using pretty much the same colours as I've used for the Knights and Warriors up to this point. I did try and make the bolt Thrower itself look like it's made of aged wood to show it's been in service for many years. The photos aren't the best though so that probably doesn't come across too well.

With this war machine I've finally hit the 500pt mark of completed units for Minas Tirith, which is enough for a standard game (I think), so hopefully I can try them out on the battlefield soon enough. A certain friend has a horde of Orcs that are getting a bit big for their boots, perhaps the men of Gondor can put them in their place....

The White City - 3 warbands completed

It's been a long time since I last posted anything, but that's not to say that I've been idle on the painting front. At least not by my standards when it comes to completing stuff anyway....

I've got back into the Lord of the Rings miniatures game from GW and have made decent progress so far this year in a modest Minas Tirith army.

With army lists in this game working on the basis of a character and then models that form their warband, it's a much more modular way of building an army (in my opinion anyway), than say Age of Sigmar. In addition the average size game for LoTR seems to be around the 500pt mark, which is surely some thing I can achieve in a year right???

Without further Ado I present the first warband:

This is a Captain of Minas Tirith leading 12 Warriors of Minas Tirith.

With the banner, spears and their shieldwall ability, as well as a couple of bows in the rear rank to keep the enemy honest, this serves as the anvil of my force than the enemy shall (hopefully) break upon.

Next up is warband 2:

This warband is led by none other than Damrod, my first named character who serves as part of Faramirs Rangers. He's leading 6 Rangers of Gondor into battle, who provide the bulk of the firepower of the army. Granted their only packing strength 2 bows but their shoot value is pretty good still so you never know!

Warband 3 that's been completed is:

Another Captain but this time mounted. He's leading 5 Knights of Minas Tirith who should be the hammer to my warriors anvil. At least that's how it'll be in my head.

So good progress so far this year, with the 3 warbands I'm well on the way to achieving a 500pt army for Minas Tirith, at which point I'll look to get some games in!

Next up is a mounted banner bearer and an Avenger Bolt Thrower.

Mortal Realms Progress 9 - Lord Arcanum on Gryph-Charger

So it's been a while since I posted anything but that doesn't mean I haven't been busy!

I recently have completed the next addition to the Astral Templars a Lord Arcanum on Gryph-Charger!

Introducing the leader of my Sacrosanct chamber Lord Arcanum Phoram the Ascendant.

I've been painting this guy on and off since about the start of December, as and when time allowed, but it's still taken me alot longer to finish than I thought.

I'll go out on a limb and say this was the hardest model I've ever had to paint, mainly because of all the different textures. You've got feathers, animal hide, leather, armour and claws all on the one model!

Still I'm very chuffed with how it's turned out and think he makes quite the centrepiece to the army so far. I'll have to do a full shot of them all once I get to the 1000pt mark. 5 Evocators on foot are being lined up for painting as we speak, so fingers crossed I can get them done quicker than their Lord and get over that first 1k for the Astral Templars.

As to whether I'll get a game in with them this year, well that depends on whether we'll be allowed outside again!

Mortal Realms Progress 8 - Knight Questor

The next addition to the Astral Templars is complete:
Knight Questor "Arinos Wolfsworn" joins the ranks. Once again the name is from the Realm of Plastic AoS name generator (as will all my characters names).
This model was much simpler to paint up as it's not one of the Sacrosanct chamber and covered in robes. Choosing where to put the green spot colours was a little bit of a challenge, however I think they work well where they are and tie in the model to the wider army.

In the lore Knights Questor are on a mission given to them by Sigmar, so to represent the fact he's on a quest I've tried to paint his armour in a more worn down fashion to show he's been on campaign for a long time. Rules wise they're not the best, however I look forward to trying him out soon, and perhaps keeping a tally of any champions/heroes he kills amongst my group.

Next on the list is another unit of Sequitors. As I've painted 6 of these already I'm just adding another 4 so I've got the option of 2 small units or 1 big one.

At the same time I'm also adding some artillery to the army in the form of a Celestar Ballista. The addition of a model from yet another chamber means I really need to get reading up on how the organisation works within the Stormcast...

Hopefully I'll have those done in time for the arrival of the Lord-Arcanum which will round out the first 1000pts!

Mortal Realms Progress 7 - Knight Incantor

Introducing the latest addition to my Astral Templars Stormhost - Vora Suremane - The Warden of the Howling Gale.

This is the exclusive Knight Incantor that comes with the mortal realms subscription. I must say I prefer this model to the slightly more static pose of the regular Incantor (though I'll be painting up at least two more at some point!), Plus she was great fun to paint with lots of small details to pick out.

Ive tried to get a glowing effect working on the staff as well as adding progressive blue highlights up to white on the outstretched left hand, as if she was building up power to smite the enemies of Sigmar (at least that's how it looks in my head).

Painting wise i stuck to pretty much the same method as I've been using to paint the rest of my Stormcast so far. The exception being that I based the bone coloured robes in tallarn sand as opposed to Wraithbone:

Personally I find it looks much better and serves as a much more natural base to build up highlights from than Wraithbone ever did, so will be using that going forward.
Next on the list of things to paint is a Knight-Questor. Whilst the rules for it might be lacking the model itself looks awesome, plus the lore behind it is even better! After that ive got a Celestar Ballista to paint up and another unit of 5 Sequitors, to finish by the end of July, just in time for the next delivery which for me will have the first of the big boys - A Lord Arcanum on Grpyh-Charger, which should round out my first 1000pts of Astral Templars.

So lots to do between now and the end of July but if I can keep up my current progress I should stay on target!

Mortal Realms Progress 6 - Castigators

Continuing on from my last post the next unit from the Mortal Realms magazine has been completed:
Castigators provide ranged support in a Sacrosanct army, very much counterparts to the Judicators in a strike chamber. That said the opinion of their performance on the battlefield according to the internet is lukewarm at best....

Still, the units was good fun to paint with alot of detail on the models allowing for a bit of variation from the scheme I used for the Sequitors.

Being as these are the easy to build miniatures that I got through multiple copies of the magazine there's a fair amount of repetition on the poses. The latest issue though contains some multipart Castigators I think, so once I get round to assembling the 4 of then I should add some variety that way whilst also rounding out the unit to 12 in total.

Realistically I can't see myself fielding more that 1 unit of 6 in my future lists, possibly as part of a hailstorm battery but it's nice to have the option if I ever do decide to go infantry heavy!

Anyway, with these 8 completed this brings the tally up to:

Mortal Realms - Stormcast Tally of Completion!

6 x Sequitors - COMPLETED
8 x Castigators - COMPLETED
1 x Gryphound - ASSEMBLED & UNDERCOATED
1 x Knight Incantor - ASSEMBLED & UNDERCOATED
1 x Celestar Ballista - ASSEMBLED & UNDERCOATED
1 x Knight Questor - ON SPRUE

I need to revisit this tally business at some point, perhaps tracking completion against what I should have from the magazine as opposed to what I actually have. If only to make myself believe I'm keeping up with release schedule a bit!

In anycase, after painting all that infantry (I know it's only 14 models but that's alot for me!) I figure I'll reward myself by painting a character next to lead my erstwhile band:

This is my as yet unamed Knight-Incantor with some base colours on so far. Hopefully if i can keep up the progress here and there as I did with the Castigators I'll have her done by the end of June, that's the aim anyway.....

Mortal Realms Progress 5 - Checking in

As the title says, just checking in. The arrival of my second daughter has put a brake on the progress I was making as most of the free time I have is being spent with the first born to make sure she doesn't feel left out. Between that and the sleep deprivation it does make you wonder how anyone in our hobby gets stuff done with very young children on the scene.

Still, wouldn't change it for the world. Well maybe id like more sleep...

On the hobby side of things despite everything progress is being made on the Castigators from my last post. With the mobile set up I've got for them (I'll explore this in a future post), I've been taking any opportunity to break out the brushes, even if it's only for 10 minutes. Whilst progress has been glacial as a result, it does mean I'm inching closer to completion of my second Stormcast unit.

Of course during this time and in spite of the global pandemic we're currently in the middle of Hachette are still getting deliveries of their mortal realms magazine out.

Luckily for me the Stormcast element is relatively low in the latest delivery, consisting of 1 Knight Questor. For anyone wondering, this isn't the case with the Nighthaunt, and my mate in this mortal realms endeavor is currently drowning in ghosts and terrain!

With the latest delivery the tally is as follows:

Mortal Realms - Stormcast Tally of Completion!

6 x Sequitors - COMPLETED
5 x Castigators - ASSEMBLED & UNDERCOATED & 50% PAINTED
1 x Gryphound - ASSEMBLED & UNDERCOATED
1 x Knight Incantor - ASSEMBLED & UNDERCOATED
1 x Celestar Ballista - ASSEMBLED & UNDERCOATED
1 x Knight Questor - ON SPRUE

So I'm still behind but not by as much as you'd think or I'd thought I'd be at this point. I've also updated the numbers of Castigators and Sequitors as I got more in the delivery before last.

Hopefully by next delivery in 4 weeks I'll have finished the 8 Castigators and be into the characters, which I'm really looking forward to doing!

Anyway, that's it for now, there's a funny smell which I think means someone needs changing again....sigh....

Mortal Realms - Progress 4 - Castigators

Progress continues to be made in clearing the back log of Stormcast from the mortal realms magazine. The next delivery lands any day now so it's all hands to the pump so to speak.

I've pretty much put the base colours on the collection of Castigators I've got. Now the eagle eyed amongst you will have picked up on the fact that by issue 10 (the issue I'm currently up to on deliveries), I should only have 5 Castigators, whereas I have 8. Either way the extra ones dont help too much as the units are taken in multiples of 3 in matched play anyway.

Here's the progress so far on them:
Base colours are as follows:
Armour - Screamer Pink
Robes - Wraithbone
Tabbards - Caliban Green
Greatbows - Boltgun metal, Retributor gold and Abbadon black
Armour trim - Retributor Gold

Its onto the washes next, which I've already started on the robes using Agrax Earthshade.

There's another 2 Castigators to come in a later issue of Mortal Realms (Issue 15?), so if I can get two copies of that I'll have an even 12 Castigators, enough for two units of 6 which appeals to the collector in me even if they're not in a great place rules wise about now.

Mortal Realms Progress 3

Finally finished the first unit of Sequitors and I've got to say, I'm pretty pleased with them, if I do say so myself!

These are all easy to build ones and I'll be honest and say I've not bothered to change the poses, I'll leave that to future units I think. To be honest I'm just aiming to paint them up the best I can and try to keep up with the pace of release of the mortal realms magazine. In fact I might try and keep a tally, more for my own sanity than anything during these lockdown times.

I'm a subscriber and with how Hachette work with the deliveries am currently up to issue 7.

Mortal Realms - Stormcast Tally of Completion! (I might think of a better name for this...)

3 x Sequitors - COMPLETED (5 done!)
3 x Castigators - ASSEMBLED & UNDERCOATED
1 x Gryphound - ASSEMBLED & UNDERCOATED
1 x Knight Incantor - ASSEMBLED & UNDERCOATED
1 x Celestar Ballista - ASSEMBLED & UNDERCOATED

Mortal Realms Progress 2

Up to issue 7 now of the Mortal Realms magazine and as expected im falling behind. In fairness I started out with more copies of the first issues than I should have, 4 in total! I've also actually completed the first unit of Sequitors now (technically more than 1 as there's 6 models in this 5 strong unit). A photo of the completed unit will follow for my next post, when I can take a decent one.

In the meantime the recent good weather here in the UK, coupled with our virus lockdown, has resulted in a push to catch up. So here's the next lot of models all assembled and undercoated:

Next squad of Sequitors, 2 more great maces as well as a few conversions of the standard easy to build models to try to keep things interesting.

The first set of Castigators. Being a 3 person unit I'm actually painting almost 2 squads worth here. I think I've got another couple of them somewhere....

The final unit is the Celestar ballista, one which I'm really looking forward to painting. I'll probably do it as a reward for completing the Castigators as I'll have painted quite alot (for me) of Infantry by then!

Anyway, I'll leave it here for now and get back to painting!

Mortal Realms progress 1

So the first delivery of the Mortal realms magazine has come. I'm splitting this with a friend and will be painting the Stormcast half whilst he has the Nighthaunt.

Between us we actually got two copies of the first 3 issues so that gives me 6 Sequitors, 6 castigators and 2 Gryphounds to paint. The aim is to try and stay on top of the deliveries by painting what comes before the next one arrives. At my usual pace of painting that's going to be hard.

In any case, here's the progress so far:

These are being painted as Astral Templars, Stormcast hailing from the Realm of Ghurr (Beasts). Still got a few stages to go on these before they're done. Then it's onto the Castigators.

Plastic fantastic Drukhari and venturing into the Mortal Realms

So January was quite a productive month. I assembled all of the Drukhari from Blood of the Phoenix (ok not the hellions...), as well as all of the stuff in the Poisonblade boxed set, except the reavers. As you can tell there's definitely a swing towards bulking out the kabalite wing of my army. At least I'm more or less sticking to the 1500pt list I built up this time (which I'll post another day).

In any case in addition to all the foot soldiers and skimmers I also found some time to assemble a new Archon for my erstwhile raiders

No name for this guy/gal yet, but I figure the whip will be handy to get the message across to the Ravager crews the game seems to be pushing in the direction of archons hanging out with.

In case the enemy decide they want to cut off the head of my force I also built up some Sslyth bodyguards to take some bullets for the new guy.

The conversion is nothing new and one I've seen online a few times. Basically it's using the khymerae kit for the snake bodies, then some spare kabalite and scourge parts I had in my bits box. I'm happy with how they've come out and they should prove a handy addition to the force, being decent in melee and shooting, as well as keeping my new Archon alive.

Anyway, that's all for now. I'll leave you with this for next time though, my first delivery of the Mortal realms magazine arrived yesterday. The nighthaunt are going to a friend but I'm slowly building a stormcast army to go with my Wood Elves for AoS

That's 3 castigators, 6 sequitors and a Gryph- Hound (in a pear tree?).

Monday, 16 December 2019

The trees are still moving!!!

So after it being nearly 5 months since my last post and after an excellent British summer consisting of the usual rain and sporting failures its back on board the painting train. Progress has continued apace with the Wood Elves with the latest completed unit being 30 dryads, to go along with my 3 kurnoth hunters presented in the last post.

For those interested the Dryads were painted the same as the kurnoth hunters, without the final layer of Ushabti bone. It makes them darker than the hunters but the variance looks good on the table (I think so anyway).

With the updated Sylvaneth rules also coming into being (finally) I've also assembled and magnetised a Treelord to lead my erstwhile band of saplings. With Treelords also being able to summon a wyldwood as well, I'll probably need to look at getting one of those at some point. Then the army really will function like the Wood Elves of the world that was.

In addition to the 30 Dryads and the Treelord I also finished a unit of 3 Warhawk Riders as well as a Great Eagle Riding Lord to lead them. Armed with the Spirit Sword (he's actually dual wielding swords) I like to think of him swooping in then leaping off the great eagle into the fray and taking names.

Lastly I've also been assembling a unit of 10 Wyldwood Rangers to support my Eternal Guard. I actually bought the box mainly for the additional 10 shields so I could fully shield up the Guard, so I've had the box for quite some time now. The Rangers are some way off being finished but here's a photo of them nonetheless, posed striding through the forest, on the lookout for Interlopers. I like to think of them as the vanguard of my battlehost, even though I think they're rules suggest they're heavy infantry.

Photos to follow for all of this when I can get everything down out of the loft.

Linked to all of this progress, the release of the new free cities battletome has got me very excited. The livig City allegiance is definitely something that needs exploring, although quite how I'll represent my Warhawk Riders and Eagle Rider in that list is anyone's guess....ah well, nice problems to have.

New Beginnings...sort of

So following on my last post I've decided to put the Wood Elves to one side for the time being. This year has most certainly been a year where I've played alot more 40k than AoS anyway, and the state of my poor Dark Eldar army has galvanized me into revisiting them.

Also handy was the release of not one, but two new army boxed sets for the Truekin, Blood of the Phoenix for Psychic Awakening and the Poisonblade Christmas boxed set, both of which I now own (purchases funded through the selling off of my Word Bearers).

In any case both boxes have arrived and I've been busting myself in assembling the mountains of new grey plastic like a madman

First up is the Master of Blades himself, Drazhar. This model is such a great sculpt, and whilst not as iconic as the original more than makes up for it in sheer dynamism and board presence! Additionally his new rules and soon to come points drop are most welcome.

Where would the Fallen Phoenix be without a squad of deadly fallen aspect warriors. Again, having these in plastic is great news and meant I finally made the jump to replace my original metal Incubi.

The first of two new venoms, taking  me to four in total. I've got a vague idea of this being a "command" venom for my Archon and possibly some Sslyth to scoot around the board in. Of course if GW ever decide to up the transport capacity to 6 (please!) then perhaps it'll become a ride for Draz and Co.

The second of the two new venoms. This is a little more inconspicuous and will probably be transporting a kabalite warrior squad.

The first of two Scourge Squads. I know current internet wisdom suggests haywire blasters, but I can't help thinking of the sheer destructive potential of 4 blasters deepstriking in!

In any case as you can probably tell this list is going to be heavily kabal based for the moment. Rest assured though I've already got some Haemonculus Coven units in the wings I want to show off. Until next time!

The trees...they're moving!

So I know these aren't technically elves but the Wood Elves from the land that was hung around with walking trees so why should it be any different in the mortal realms! Sorry, what's that... wanderers betrayal in Ghyran?.... surely that's water under the bridge now!
Anywho, here's my 3 kurnoth hunters, minus one head. We'll just say he's the unit champion for now until I source a replacement. For those that are wandering where the head has gone I've used it for my Avatar of the Hunt conversion which is currently in progress.

For those that are interested I undercoated Abaddon black, basecoated the bark areas in Calthan Brown (old foundation paint) and the green "flesh" areas Orkhide shade (another old paint). Bark was then layered dessert yellow and finally ushabti bone before a wash of Aggrax Earthshade. Green areas were layered with Warpstone glow and moot green before a wash of Athonian camoshade.

New year....Same Armies

I'm back! It's been a while since I last posted and, considering it's now nearly the end of February, much too late for any new years resolutions....isn't it?

Concious of the fact I didn't get anywhere near achieving any of my goals from last year, mainly because I kept getting distracted by my Dark Eldar, Harlequins and Necromunda gang, I've decided to set the bar even lower this year.

With this in mind my main aim for 2019 is to complete the 2000 point Wood Elf battlehost the was my main resolution last year. For those keeping up you might remember I'd painted around 1300points in the end, so surely even I can paint up 700pts in 12 months...you'd think so anyway.

That said I've changed my list yet again! After some more games with my army I'm getting to a point where my Elves are putting up a good fight whilst remaining true to the spirit of my old Wood Elf army, although they certainly wouldn't stand up in a tournament setting! I'm sure things will no doubt change again when I play some more games (2 more games lined up over the next 3 weeks), but I'll try to stay true to this list (try...):
